Dog River Cleanup Event December 8th, 2007 9 a.m.
Lusher Park
2459 N. Dog River Drive
UPDATE: The Cleanup Event was a great success! With over 50 volunteers, 10 motorboats and a dozen kayaks, we collected over 2 tons of trash. The trash trailer was completely filled with all kinds of interesting items. Some of the more unusual items were: an electric guitar, a crutch, a bowling ball, an arc welding machine, a bicycle, a partial boat hull, and a rusted out charcoal grill. Everyone who showed up did an outstanding job and should be commended for thier hard work. I would especially like to thank Cub Scout Pack 133, Ethan Crowell of Volunteer Mobile and the entire AmeriCorps ERT Unit, Travis Osborne of Holcim, Inc. for donating $500 for food and beverages, The City of Mobile's Keep Mobile Beautiful Campaign for donating the trash bags, gloves and grabbers, Kara Lankford from the Mobile Bay National Estuary Program and ALL of the volunteers who gave up their Saturday for this worthy cause. The Mobile Bay Kayak Fishing Association and the Alabama Coastal Fishermen's Association did an outstanding job of collecting trash on the water, as did several members of the Dog River Clearwater Revival group. Another special thanks to Danny Adkins for working the grill, loaned to us by Total Safety. The food was delicious and plentiful.

Original Post
Andrea Ramey of NBC News 15 recently did a report on the “mounds of trash” floating in the Dog River. I was disgusted by the report and decided to do something about it. I am organizing a cleanup effort using kayaks, motorboats, and landlubbers to pick up the trash from the river and the shorelines.
The Mobile Bay Kayak Fishing Association, The Alabama Coastal Fisherman's Association, The Mobile Bay National Estuary Program, the Dog River Clearwater Revival, Cub Scout Pack 133 and Mobile Baykeeper have all volunteered to assist in this effort.
The City of Mobile has agreed to donate the trash bags and pick up the collected trash after the event. Judging from the report and having visited Lusher park last week, we will need a lot of volunteers and a lot of trash bags.
Please join us at Lusher Park on December 8th at 9 a.m. to help clean up the trash.
Thanks,
Matt Seese
